There are many attack types, so you don't have to run in there with "guns blazing". The controls are left/right arrow keys to move, 'a' to attack, to roll forward press up arrow key + 's', to flip downwards press down arrow key + 's', to roll forward and attack press the up arrow key + 's' + 'a', and 'a' is also the action button to use ladders/items.
